Brief historical and geographical presentation

The Apostolic Vicariate of Nyundo was erected on February 14, 1952. His Apostolic Vicar Most Reverend Aloys BIGIRUMWAMI, Titular Bishop of Garriana, received episcopal ordination on 1/06/1952^erOn November 10, 1959 the Apostolic Vicariate of Nyundo became the Diocese of Nyundo, with Most Reverend Aloys BIGIRUMWAMI as its first Bishop. He was succeeded by Most Reverend Vincent NSENGIYUMVA, ordained Bishop on January 12, 1974; who was succeeded by Most Reverend Wenceslas KALIBUSHI, ordained Bishop on March 27, 1977. During the Genocide perpetrated against the Tutsis in 1994, the Diocese of Nyundo lost thousands of human lives, including 95 consecrated persons among whom were 32 priests. On March 22, 1997, Most Reverend Alexis HABIYAMBERE, S.J. was ordained Bishop to succeed the Most Reverend Wenceslas KALIBUSHI. After his resignation, on March 11, 2016, Most Reverend Anaclet MWUMVANEZA, the current Bishop, was appointed to succeed Bishop Alexis. He was ordained Bishop on May 21, 2016

The Diocese of Nyundo is located in the Western Province of Rwanda. It is extended on an area of approximately 4000 km2.² It covers the entire former prefectures of Gisenyi and Kibuye. Currently, it fully encompasses the Districts of Rubavu, Ngororero, Rutsiro, Karongi, and a large part of the District of Nyabihu as well as some sectors of Nyamasheke District.
